The Valero Verdict: Stuber

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.

On the docket today, Stuber, the action comedy starring Kumail Nanjiani & Dave Bautista.

  • Nanjiani is insanely funny in this film. His mannerisms, demeanor, jokes, and acting was just brilliant in this film. If Big Sick wasn’t his acting coming out party, this totally will be.
  • Nanjiani/Bautista chemistry was great. Sometimes in buddy comedies the chemistry can lack, these two hit it on all cylinders. They are the perfect pair and wouldn’t mind seeing them on the screen together again.
  • There were a lot of annoying typical elements of your typical action movie: Villain shoots one person point blank in the head, but can’t hit the main character 2 feet in front of him.
  • ONE MASSIVE PLOT HOLE that literally frustrated me throughout the movie. I will not go into detail as this movie doesn’t come out for another month, but once the movie drops, I will share my thoughts.

The Verdict:

*** 1/2 out of ***** gavels

The entire movie concept was was great, this had the one little piece of the puzzle that is really hard to overlook which would have made this an even better movie. Kumail proved very worth of being on the next level of comedic actors and I hope this propels him to bigger comedic roles. Bautista was a whole lot of fun in his first lead and first comedy role, I wasn’t sure what to expect from him but he was really great. The buddy cop things can be overdone and boring but Kumail/Bautista was a great combination and the funniest cop movie I’ve seen since Lets Be Cops.

Should You See It?: A summer of box office sequels and remakes and all sort of other things, go see this different funny take on the buddy cop movies and thank me later.

The Valero Verdict: The Secret Life of Pets II

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.

On the docket today, the Secret Life of Pets 2. The first was super funny and a smash hit at the box office.

  • New Cast Additions: Harrison Ford in his first animated role was great. If you truly think about Ford as an animal, an old tough dog truly fits him. Tiffany Haddish was another amazing addition to the cast, she is hilarious and was just that in this film.
  • I find the Max character in this film rather boring. His only quality on-screen moments in this film were with Rooster.
  • Kevin Hart is the funniest man on the planet.
  • Can the Secret Life of Pets III be about how Gidget and Snowball fall in love? Or they become the modern day Bonnie & Clyde (minus all the killing of course)
  • The run-time of this movie was PERFECT! Even kid movies are pushing the envelope with run-time, at an hour and 27 minutes, this was great.

The Verdict:

** 1/2 out of *****

This one fell short of the original. The first and second act were boring at times, once they got the whole crew together in the third act the movie picked up and was packed with some good laughs. The additions of Haddish and Ford were great, Hart was great but outside of that, I was left wanting more from this.

Should You See It?: Bring the kids for sure. There is enough in this movie for adults to enjoy, and the kids will eat it up.

The Valero Verdict: Rocketman

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.

On the docket today, Rocketman a musical fantasy about the story of Elton John’s breakthrough years.

  • This movie is everything Bohemian Rhapsody wanted to be and more.
  • I would have been WAY happier if Taron Egerton winning the Oscar (well not over Mr. Cooper) instead of Rami MEHlek. Egerton gave hands down one of the best performances of the year. He truly embodied the role of Elton John and it was truly a sight to see.
  • Cinematography in this film was AMAZING. We all know about the colors of Elton John but to see them correlated to the big screen was fantastic.
  • Is it cheating to say I loved the music? Obviously Elton John is a musically legend but the way they were able to piece the movie together with the songs was a thing of art.
  • From Rob Stark to David Budd to Elton John’s love interest, Richard Madden performances have truly shown his range of acting. He did a fantastic job of making you truly loathe his character.

The Verdict

**** out of *****

From start to finish Director Dexter Fletcher takes you on this beautiful journey highlighting one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all-time with an all time great performance out of Taron Egerton. This is one of those movies you have to see in theaters to truly appreciate the art behind making this beautiful film. The acting, the cinematography the story, the direction was all amazing.

Should You See It?: YES!!!!!! Go see this film NOW! Don’t watch Bohemian Rhapsody and all it’s lies, see this instead!!!!

The Valero Verdict: Ann Rolls Green

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.

On the docket today, an Independent Film from Raspberry Films: Ann Rolls Green.

  • Kayleigh-Paige Rees was a really good lead in this film. She fit the role of Ann perfect. I would love to see her branch out into bigger film roles.
  • The colors of this film (as you can see above) were shot wonderfully. You don’t always see that in a film of this magnitude.
  • The script was different and unique, I totally appreciate a writer/director willing to take a risk with a movie. It brings authenticity to an art that is stuck in remakes.
  • The score was fun, I loved the music throughout and it really enhanced the film.
  • “I just saw you chase a dancing apple through the forest with a toy sword”. I about spite out my drink when this line was read. Hilarious.

The Verdict:

*** out of ***** gavels

The film is a whole lot of fun. I truly loved George Perry willing to take a risk with an interesting original story. (I mean a kid thinks he’s the next coming of Christ). Rees was impressive to me for the first time seeing her on-screen. My lone issue with the film was you weren’t sure what scenes to take serious or not. I felt like maybe I was laughing when I wasn’t supposed to and vice versa.

Should You See It?: Sure. It drops on Amazon Prime on June 7th. If you like independent fun films, you will really enjoy this film.

Special Thank you to Raspberry Films for letting me screen the film early.

The Valero Verdict: Little

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.

On the docket today, the Regina Hall led movie called Little.

  • Marsai Martin is a damn star. She really is great in this movie and honestly really look forward to watching her grow and star in more films. She was super great in this role and an unexpected pleasant surprise.
  • I expected a little more Regina Hall but while she was on-screen, she was fantastic. To be honest, I am waiting for a Director to cast her in a super serious role and watch her just thrive in it. I feel like she has an Oscar nominated performance her we haven’t seen yet.
  • A lot of the big time funny parts were in the trailer i.e. the BMW (Black Mama Whooping) scene was hilarious.
  • I really hated the poor tasted joke at the beginning about the kid transitioning. I don’t feel like we have a place in movies for this, poorly worded joke that wasn’t needed nor funny.

Overall Verdict:

** 1/2 out of ***** stars

Like I’ve said before, predictable movies are okay when they are these types of movies. I enjoyed the performances from Regina Hall and Marsai Martin. It wasn’t an over the top super funny but it satisfied me from start to finish for me to enjoy it.

Should You See It?: Wait till Redbox. It’s not a right now need to see it kind of movie but I definitely think its worth a rent when it comes out.

The Valero Verdict: Fighting with My Family

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.

On the docket today, Fighting with My Family, the movie based on WWE Diva Paige.

  • The casting of Florence Pugh turned out perfect, she played Paige very well, especially the Paige of the early years. She was very Raw in the film which is what she needed because Paige was in a very Raw position starting from the bottom of the WWE. Very good casting.
  • Nostalgia from the Rock was fantastic. While not in the film a whole lot, you did get to see some old fashion Rock lines that were classic for his many years in the WWE.
  • The opening of this movie was absolute brutal to watch as a former professional wrestler, I get these guys were “rookies” but man, the in ring stuff was brutal to watch.
  • The story flows very well, it tells the story you are wanting to see, with the 1st act setting the story, the 2nd bringing you the challenge and leaving the 3rd act to bring it all together to get us our feel good ending.
  • Vince Vaughn was good in this, but it felt so weird seeing him in a role of this nature.

The Verdict:

*** out of ***** stars

I really wasn’t sure what to expect with this movie but it’s one of the feel good stories that you can really get behind and cheer for throughout. The Rock brings some fun humor to the movie, Pugh does a fantastic job as Paige, and the rest of the cast packs a nice punch as well.

Should I see it?: Yes. I think no matter if you are a wrestling fan or not, this is a well written movie with solid story telling, you laugh, it pulls at the heartstrings and you cheer in triumph at the end.

The Valero Verdict: A Madea Family Funeral

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.

On the docket today, A Madea Family Funeral, the final installment of the 11 Tyler Perry driven Madea movies.

  • Let me start with Uncle Heathrow, EVERY single time this man was on the screen, he stole the show. Just absolutely brilliant. It has been a very long time since a character had made me laugh as hard as I did when he was on screen.
  • And Tyler Perry’s character’s Madea/Joe/Brian, Aunt Bam and Hattie as always were super funny while on the screen.
  • Can I talk about David Otunga for a second? He could possibly be the worst actor I’ve ever seen on the big screen, I am not kidding. He was just awful.
  • The funeral scene was magical (All 80 hours of it), it was just well thought out and a whole lot of fun.
  • One of my favorite line of the movie was “I wanna know why his hoe, smell like his bro.”

The Verdict:

*** out of *****

My rating my be a bit generous but I don’t care, Uncle Heathrow deserves probably 5 stars on his own. The story was okay, nothing groundbreaking but they did put the pieces together throughout the film. I will say outside of the core Madea characters, the acting wasn’t really good (that includes Worst Actor of the Year nominee David Otunga). But you sure do laugh a whole lot and was a nice fitting end to the series.

Should I see it?: I went back and forth with whether or not you should see this in theaters or wait till Redbox/Digital. If you aren’t a big Marvel/Comic Book movie fan, totally go check this out this weekend.

The Valero Verdict: What Men Want

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.

On the docket today, What Men Want, the female driven version of the 2000 movie What Women Want. This one starring Taraji P. Henson.

  • The scene from the trailer in which she catches the ball, I probably saw that trailer a trillion times and even when it came on in the movie, it was still hilarious.
  • Why does sex in movies so outrageous looking? I will never understand why the over-blow how sex really is vs. how they portray it in movies.
  • Tracy Morgan as the Lavar Ball like character is absolute MASTERFUL, OH MY GOD!!!!!!!! Just brilliant.
  • I laughed, and laughed a lot. Between the Psychic scene in which she is playing with Tarot Cards and bust our a Uno Skip card to the Club Scene where they are acting like straight fools, I laughed from start to finish during this film.
  • Taraji P. Henson, she’s a star, period. She’s one of my favorite actress in Hollywood. I will always catch a movie she is in, in theaters.
  • It’s a feel good movie, it teaches you that you should watch how you treat people on your way to the top.

The Verdict:

*** out of ***** stars

The flow of the movie just worked, it started up, went down, somewhere in between act 1 and 2 we got our set-up and we settle down and got our ending. While the movie was predictable from start to finish and it’s okay, as long as the story works, and it did here.
I enjoyed the remake (revision) and wouldn’t hate the idea of a sequel either.

Should I See It?: Yes, absolutely yes. If you are thinking of seeing a movie this weekend, this should be the one. It’s a feel good movie with a whole lot of laughs.

Thinking Out Loud: Happy Death Day 2U

Welcome to the 3rd edition of Thinking Out Loud where I take running notes throughout the movie.

I went to see Happy Death Day 2U, the first one wasn’t a bad cheeky horror flick. Was a surprise breakout hit when it hit the theaters which always means we are going to get a sequel.

This will be obviously SUPER HEAVY on Spoilers, you can check out my non-spoiler review here: https://letterboxd.com/rickygangster/film/happy-death-day-2u/

Here we go…

Drunk kid in a car hungover, I think we’ve all been there

Oh snap…. we’ve got a bunch of science mumbo jumbo talking

Science teacher is a tad mean. Why are teachers so negative? Aren’t they supposed to be positive?

I love how in movies you can get text from “Unknown caller” – because that’s literally impossible

Yep, typical dumb kid going into random rooms. I hear noises I’m running, the opposite way.

He dead

ROUND 222222222

Mean ass dog part II

Dude on the skateboard didn’t spill any coffee coming around the corner? Lol k

RECAP OF THE FIRST ONE

LMFAOOOOO A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM

DICK SHOT 😳😳😳😳😳

Dick head teacher is back.

Thank god for movie pass, (I have no clue why I came to see this)

Oh no, a super serious moment in a super dumb cheesy horror movie. Why?

Safest place was a basketball game, and they just didn’t know it was baby mask wearing night.

Random horror chase scene where our protagonist runs to no man’s land where there is nobody in sight but the big bad killer.

Why can no one ever be quiet when hiding?

Clone/Twin and somehow a short guy with a wrench can fend off two security guards, is leaving an option?

Slow motion the random science thing blew up, k…..

Ohhhhhhh so he sent her back to past now? She gets to relive it all over again? K….

I’m sure the republicans would love the throwing of the global warming paperwork.

Pissed off Global warming folks, outed a gay guy what’s next?

TOODLES. Who says that?

She’s never seen Back to the Future. Well they were kind of meh anyway, I forgive her.

Now offending Anne Frank and Helen Keller, Jesus. And now the handicap.

The Moms still alive? Who didn’t see that coming…. actually I didn’t.

Wake me up when this shit is over, like it’s not even funny bad.

Oh snap. The killer is on the loooooseeeee.

How in the hell did he miss her by like 20 feet with that swing of an axe?

Won’t lie I kind of dug her falling off the cliff.

I literally am thinking about the bomb smoothie I am going to make when I get home.

Banana, Strawberries and milk…. sounds so good right now.

Oh yeah, the movie. They are talking about science and her coming back to life and blah blah blah

Oooooo fun, she gets to killer herself a bunch of times.

Oh no, she jumped out of the plane in a bikini and landed right in front of the loving couple as she gave us the bird, the audience (of like 9) laugh out loud.

Just saw that Marriott changed their app to read Bon Voy…. why?

People in movies always be breaking out of hospitals like it’s nothing.

So she ultimately decided to stay in the past? Meh.

Closing loops now folks.

Back to seriously moment again.

Oh little boy toy is going to save the day.

So disrespectful, she’s got her shoes on her bed. Even in a hotel. Gross.

Mommy/Daughter moment. THIS IS A CHEESY HORROR FILM. STOP TRYING TO BE SO SERIOUS.

Who nicknames their kid TREE?

So many serious moments.

As a movie lover, I hope the director/writer/producer make millions off this.

Omg. Are really really really deep serious moment now? Cheesy cliché after cheesy cliché.

Dick head teacher is back to ruin everything.

This movie is never going to end.

People are actually laughing at this dumb movie, oh no they stole the continuum transfunctioner

(Dude Where’s My Car is a classic movie)

I hate the way people use cell phones in movies.

Oh no, the cheating hubby is the killer. Twist the wife was in on it. Boy toy to save the day again!!!!!!!

Omg that was so cheesy, someone shoot me. That killing was absurd and dumb.

THE END …….

The ending the kid says “omg I just shit my pants” and the guy behind me just about fell out his chair laughing.

After credit scene? The FBI has arrived to take all the kids, please let this end. Maybe this is the beginning of the new MIB.

Overall thoughts:

*1/2 out *****

I gave this movie a half of a star, well because someone had to make the movie and I respect that.

I am sure there are going to be people out there that like this movie, and good for them. But I am not one of those said people.

Horror movies should never take themselves super serious, and this movie tried way too hard. I don’t think the movie even understood what it was trying to be. One minute you had her being serious with her Mom and the next you are making awful jokes about Helen Keller, like do one or the other, not both.

Obviously we weren’t going to get amazing acting, we were going to get a cheesy horror flick with campy ideas with a couple of laughs and so cool killing.
I don’t think any of that happened once.
This movie was not my cup of tea.
