The Valero Verdict: Hobbs & Shaw

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.

On the docket today: The spin-off of the popular franchise Fast & Furious, Hobbs and Shaw.

  • Plot: Lawman Luke Hobbs and outcast Deckard Shaw form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity

Two guys that truly hate each other team up to take on Black Superman, that should have been the true synopsis/plot of this film. I mean who wouldn’t want to see that?
  • Director/Writing: David Leitch/Chris Morgan

The writing was your typical over the top action flick that had some decent plot points at time and the direction was fine, I did have some issues with some of the rough editing of the film.
  • Acting: Dewayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba

Look the chemistry between Johnson/Statham is pure brilliance. Their banter is super tongue and cheek and is rather funny, nothing between them is forced and sometimes pairings can easily come off as such.

Jason Statham: He is so fun to watch, can we cast him as the next villain in the John Wick franchise? Fight scenes between Statham and Reeves would be masterful. Statham has truly formed into the new Jet Li/Jackie Chan of out time.

Dwayne Johnson: I love the way he comes across on the screen, he is just this massive lovable character that is always easy to root for. I love watching this man in Action movies, one of the biggest reasons why is the fact he LOOKS like he can kick some serious ass and of course does.

Idris Elba: He was a fantastic antagonist. He is the perfect guy to play this role, I would love to see him as like a Bond villain. He just had that smug smart ass ability to just make you hate the guy. I love it.
  • Favorite Scene: Both surprise cameos, anything with Helen Mirren and basically everything Vanessa Kirby was involved in.
  • Enjoyment: If I was rating this movie alone on just pure enjoyment? This movie would get hands down Five Stars. We had not one but TWO amazing cameos, and about 20 Game of Thrones references, what was not to love?

The Verdict:

*** out of ***** gavels

This movie is everything you want from a Summer Blockbuster. I mean this movie was so ridiculous and over the top and too be absolutely honest I loved it. I mean the Rock held onto a helicopter by a chain by himself, I mean let’s be real, it sounds as cool as it sounds. All four of the main characters in this film played their roles well including Kirby stealing the show on several occasions. The movie was a little on the long side but overall this is one of the best action movies of the year.

Should You See It:? YES, run don’t walk. This is the type of movie that you want to see in theaters. The big screen, the loud surround sound, kick back and enjoy the ride.
