The Valero Verdict: Late Night

Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.

On the docket today, the Mindy Kaling written movie about a Late night talk-show host who is on the verge of losing her job.

  • Emma Thompson: If I was giving away awards for best performance of the 1st half of 2019, Thompson would hands down win the award and it wouldn’t be close. She was so good in this film, I was blown away by her performance. She was charming, witty, evil, funny, smart and just down right brilliant in this movie.
  • Mindy Kaling penned a true gem. It was so refreshing the originality she brought in a landscape filled with remakes, comic books and sequels. The way she was able to write about issues from racism to gender disparity and do it in a clever and playful way was great.
  • John Lithgow: Though this man will always be Arthur Mitchell in my books, he was very warm and loving in this role. He just brings an authenticity to the screen that very few can.
  • You get the predictability of the film, you see the twist and turns coming but it didn’t take away from anything. Nisha Ganatra took Kaling’s script and directed a true gem.

The Verdict:

**** 1/2 out of ***** gavels

This movie had power, initiative, and was down right hilarious. The shooting of the film was gorgeous, the very dark but bright lights of NYC was a pleasure on the eyes. Thompson gave an amazing performance. The chemistry was spot on from all the pertinent characters. Kaling is a Hollywood powerhouse and I truly can’t wait to see the next movie she pens.

Should You See It?: ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!!! This movie is hilarious and for EVERYONE!!!!! I promise you will non-stop laugh throughout the entire film.
