Welcome to another edition of the “The Valero Verdict” movie review. In this I will give you a quick movie review with a couple of bullet points of which I either liked or disliked. I will end the review with rating of the movie and a short overall thoughts.
On the docket today, Ma, the Octavia Spencer led thriller.

- Octavia Spencer: When I first saw this trailer, I was all in because Spencer looked genuinely deranged. She truly was a very creepy, very weird and truly evil person in this movie and she knocked it out of the ballpark.
- The Script: They dropped the ball. Period. Spencer really couldn’t carry a lackluster script to the promise land. The writing was rather lazy and it really felt like they just gave up on the third act.
- The acting was horrendous. It was very campy and very bad.
- There was a few “jump scares” that really come out of nowhere in this film. I will see they really “startle” you because you are so bored.
The Verdict:
* 1/2 out of ***** gavels
If you had me select one surprise under the radar home-run for the summer, I would have picked Ma. The trailer knocked it out of the ballpark and the movie arrived and it was just brutal. They wasted an amazing performance from Octavia Spencer with a very lazy 3rd act that seemed like it was to just set up a sequel.
Should You See It?: Absolutely NOT. Want to see a real horror movie? Wait until June 18th and buy US, that movie was perfection. I haven’t been this disappointed in a film since Glass.

[…] 3. MaThe moment I saw this trailer, I was hooked. Octavia Spencer is an amazing actress and this role looked like a slam dunk for her. That part was wrong as she was very good in this film. BUT they dropped the ball. She couldn’t carry a lackluster script that had extremely lazy writing and it felt like it just gave up in the third act. They just seemed more concerned with trying to make the third act set up a sequel instead of letting this movie be it’s own.Check out my review here: https://thesportsscript.com/2019/06/01/the-valero-verdict-ma/ […]
