Throughout the month of August we here at the Sports Script are going to answer the 5 key questions about each division in the NFL. We have gotten together 2 of the Sports Script writers Ricky Valero & Matt Wincherauk to answer the questions. These will lead up to the final reveal of everyone’s prediction for the NFL season. Today we give you the AFC South.
1. Which player needs to step up the most this year?
Ricky: Matt Schaub: I think this has to be the year where he steps up and takes the team to the Super Bowl. The AFC outside the Broncos has tons of questions, so he needs to step it up and show that he belongs in the conversation among the best QBs in football.
Matty W.: Matt Schaub: Schaub has himself a legit Super Bowl contender with his supporting cast. A great defense led by JJ Watt and two fantastic offensive weapons in Andre Johnson and Arian Foster. But this team will only go as far as he can take them.
2. Which coach has the most pressure to win this year?
Ricky: Gary Kubiak: He needs at least an appearance in the AFC Title game to get all the critics off his back. Schaub & Kubiak need this season for each other.
Matty W.: Gary Kubiak: He’s got a division at his feet, ready to pick on them but this Texans team always disappoints. Kubiak has a fantastic team, but at this point he’s had more than enough time to get them past the divisional round. Pressure is set firmly on him and Schaub
3. Who is the Sleeper player to watch in the division?
Ricky: Cecil Shorts: One of the most exciting young WR to watch last season. I think he will only get better as time goes on. No matter who is throwing the ball this guy will catch it and I think he will have another big season in Jacksonville.
Matty W.: TY Hilton: I really like Hilton as the number two wide receiver in Indianapolis. He and Andrew Luck built some great chemistry and with more pressure than he’s ever faced, Reggie Wayne won’t be the same as last year. Hilton could have a major breakout year.
4. Which player means the most to their team’s success this year?
Ricky: Andrew Luck: He took a team that won 1 game the previous year and won 10 games. He is this franchise now and without him this team wouldn’t be very good.
Matty W.: Andrew Luck: The Colts didn’t improve this offseason like I thought they would. They made a bunch of signings that didn’t really seem to give much impact. This means even more for Luck to shoulder. Where Luck goes, the entire Colts team will.
5. How will the division play out?
Ricky:
Houston Texans – 10-6 – I wavered back and forth between them and the Colts but not sure the Colts are ready to take the division crown yet.
Indianapolis Colts: 10-6
Tennessee Titans: 6-10
Jacksonville Jaguars: 4-12
Matty W.:
Houston Texans will win the division with a 10-6 record. I think the Colts regress a bit after their miraculous season, and the Texans can beat the tar out of the Jags and Titans.
Indianapolis Colts: 9-7
Tennessee Titans: 5-11
Jacksonville Jaguars: 3-13
